MindEscape’s journey from research prototype to market-ready product wasn’t a straight line—it was shaped by mentorship, feedback, and real-world validation through the WALK AUTh Innovation Accelerator program.
As a spinoff from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, SeriousMind joined WALK to transform academic research into a scalable business. The accelerator, inspired by Aristotle’s Peripatetic (walking) school, is designed to support students, researchers, and academics in turning ideas into ventures that serve society and the market.
The first major milestone came in July 2023, when MindEscape was awarded first place at the WALK AUTh Innovation Accelerator Demo Day. Out of 14 teams presenting their ventures, MindEscape stood out for its innovative approach to personality assessment—using AI-powered escape rooms instead of traditional questionnaires.
The win wasn’t just recognition; it was validation that the core idea resonated with experienced judges from the Greek startup ecosystem. It also opened doors to mentorship, networking, and early pilot opportunities that would shape the product’s development over the following years.
Beyond the competition, WALK provided something equally valuable: a community of founders and a platform for real-world experimentation. Through the accelerator’s network, MindEscape was deployed in a collaborative pilot with participating startups and teams, where founders and team members played through the escape rooms as part of team-building and self-assessment workshops.
This collaboration served multiple purposes. For the participants, it was a chance to experience a new kind of personality assessment—one that felt more like a game than a test. For SeriousMind, it was invaluable feedback: watching how real users behaved in the game, what they found engaging or confusing, and how the insights resonated when shared back with them.
The pilot confirmed something important: people don’t just enjoy MindEscape—they learn from it. When participants saw their behavioral profiles, they recognized patterns in how they work, communicate, and make decisions. For teams, it sparked conversations about diversity, complementarity, and how to leverage different strengths.
Beyond the pilot, WALK provided ongoing support through masterclasses, coaching sessions, and peer feedback. The SeriousMind team refined its pitch, clarified its value proposition, and learned how to navigate the Greek and European startup landscape.
The program also reinforced a key lesson: building a successful startup isn’t just about having great technology. It’s about understanding customers, communicating value, and staying resilient through uncertainty.
Today, MindEscape is used by companies, accelerators, and research teams across Greece and beyond. The tool that started as a PhD project in the Department of Informatics is now a research-validated platform for personality assessment in HR, team building, and even venture capital due diligence.
WALK AUTh played a crucial role in that journey—providing the structure, support, and confidence to take the leap from academia to entrepreneurship. The collaborative pilot within the accelerator was a proving ground that helped transform MindEscape from a promising idea into a product people actually want to use.
For current and future WALK participants, the message is simple: the accelerator won’t make your path easy, but it will make it clearer. And for SeriousMind, being part of that ecosystem—and testing MindEscape in real teams—was a turning point that helped turn an idea into a company.
