AI Is a Tool: SeriousMind and Digital Wellbeing on ERT3’s MindZet

On ERT3’s MindZet, a live programme focused on Gen Z, I shared an idea that has become a guiding principle in both my work and my life:

“Artificial intelligence is a tool. The question is how we use it and how we filter what we read.”

This is more than a comment about technology. It is a lesson shaped by experience.

I have lived through three different phases of digital life: a time before smartphones, the period when smartphones became part of everyday life, and the current era in which artificial intelligence is becoming embedded in almost everything we do.

Each phase has changed how we communicate, learn, work, and make decisions.

AI is a tool, not a substitute for judgement

We should not tell people to avoid specialisation or stop using AI.

We should teach them how to use it properly.

Artificial intelligence can help us research faster, analyse information, generate ideas, automate repetitive tasks, and solve complex problems. But its output is not automatically correct, neutral, or complete.

We still need to ask:

  • Where did this information come from?
  • What evidence supports it?
  • What may be missing?
  • Could the result be biased?
  • Does it make sense in this context?
  • Should I verify it before acting on it?

The ability to filter information is becoming as important as the ability to access it.

In a world where content can be generated instantly, critical thinking, media literacy, and responsible judgement are essential skills.

Building AI that serves people

At SeriousMind, this principle guides the way we build technology.

We develop AI-powered serious games and assessment tools designed to support decision-making, learning, self-awareness, and human development. Our goal is not to replace human judgement or remove human agency.

It is to give people better tools for understanding behaviour, personality, teamwork, and potential.

Through experiences such as MindEscape, RealEscape, and NeuroEscape, users interact with challenges, make decisions, collaborate, and respond to pressure. AI helps analyse behavioural patterns, but the technology remains part of a wider human process.

The final purpose is not automation for its own sake.

It is better understanding.

Technology for good

On MindZet, we discussed digital wellbeing and the idea of technology for good.

These topics matter because algorithms do more than recommend videos or organise information. They influence what people see, what they think about, how they compare themselves with others, and sometimes how they feel.

For young people growing up in an environment shaped by recommendation systems, social media, and generative AI, digital wellbeing requires more than limiting screen time. It also involves understanding how technology affects attention, emotions, identity, relationships, and decision-making.

We need to develop the confidence to use digital tools without allowing them to control every aspect of our lives.

Technology should expand human agency, not quietly replace it.

Helping Gen Z navigate an AI-shaped world

The relationship between young people and AI will shape the future of education, employment, creativity, and social life.

Young people do not need to choose between being “technical” and being “human.” They need to develop both technological fluency and human judgement.

The most valuable skills will include:

  • Critical thinking.
  • Curiosity and continuous learning.
  • Adaptability.
  • Collaboration.
  • Creativity.
  • Communication.
  • Ethical reasoning.
  • The ability to evaluate information.

AI can support these skills, but it cannot develop them on our behalf.

The more powerful our tools become, the more important it is to understand our own values, responsibilities, and limits.

A question for all of us

I left the MindZet audience with a simple question:

How do you use AI in your everyday life?

The answer matters because our everyday uses of AI will shape the systems, habits, expectations, and social norms of the future.

The question is not only whether AI will change society.

It is whether we will use AI thoughtfully enough to shape that change ourselves.

At SeriousMind, this is part of our mission: to create AI and serious games that support people rather than reduce them to data points.

Artificial intelligence is a tool.

The future depends on how wisely we choose to use it.
