AI Is a Tool: SeriousMind and Recruitment with First Achieve

I recently joined Vaia Papathanasiou and the First Achieve team for a conversation about how artificial intelligence is reshaping recruitment and HR.

From the outside, it might have looked like another discussion about “AI in HR.” But the conversation went deeper. The important question is not simply how organisations can introduce AI into recruitment. It is how AI can be combined with thoughtful design, behavioural science, and serious games to understand people more fairly—without dehumanising the process.

AI as a tool for better decisions

At SeriousMind, we believe that AI should assist human decision-making, not replace it.

Our serious games use escape rooms and interactive scenarios to create situations in which candidates and employees can demonstrate how they approach challenges. Players explore environments, solve problems, collaborate, make decisions, and respond to pressure.

These actions generate behavioural data that can complement traditional recruitment methods. Instead of relying exclusively on a CV, keywords, or a short interview, recruiters can gain additional insight into how a person behaves in a structured and engaging environment.

This is the foundation of SeriousMind’s play-to-reveal approach to personality assessment.

From gameplay to behavioural insight

A CV explains what someone has done. An interview reveals how someone communicates in a particular moment. A serious game can add another perspective: how someone behaves while facing an unfamiliar challenge.

In a SeriousMind experience, gameplay can reveal patterns related to:

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Planning and decision-making.
  • Collaboration and communication.
  • Persistence and adaptability.
  • Exploration and curiosity.
  • Reactions to pressure and uncertainty.

The purpose is not to judge a candidate based on one action or to reduce personality to a single score. Instead, AI can help identify patterns across different challenges and present them as structured insights for recruiters, managers, educators, and individuals.

Recruitment beyond keywords

Many recruitment processes begin with a CV, a job description, and a search for matching keywords. These tools are useful, but they do not always reveal how a person will contribute to a team or respond to real workplace situations.

A play-to-reveal approach can complement recruitment by helping organisations look beyond job titles and written claims. Candidates are given an opportunity to demonstrate aspects of their behaviour rather than simply describe them.

This can create a richer basis for conversations about:

  • Team fit and collaboration.
  • Learning and development needs.
  • Communication styles.
  • Leadership potential.
  • Role alignment.
  • Strengths relevant to a specific position.

SeriousMind is designed to support the human judgement of HR professionals, not to automate it away.

Keeping people at the centre

What I appreciated most about the conversation with First Achieve was its human-centred perspective.

Vaia Papathanasiou’s questions focused not only on what the technology can do, but also on how it affects the people who use it. What does it feel like when an assessment becomes a game instead of a test? How can HR teams build trust when using AI? How should technology be designed so that it serves both organisations and individuals?

These questions are essential.

An assessment technology can be technically impressive and still fail if candidates do not understand its purpose, feel uncomfortable using it, or believe that the process is unfair. Trust requires transparency, responsible data practices, clear communication, and meaningful human involvement.

Making HR more human

The future of AI in HR should not be measured only by speed, automation, or cost reduction. It should also be measured by the quality of the decisions organisations make and the experience they provide to candidates and employees.

When combined with serious games and behavioural science, AI can help HR teams gather richer evidence while making assessment more interactive and engaging. It can reduce overreliance on CV screening, support more structured decision-making, and help identify patterns that may be missed in a rushed interview.

At SeriousMind, our goal is to develop AI-powered serious games for personality assessment, HR, education, and vocational guidance. We believe that the best technology does not make people less important. It gives them better tools to understand one another.

The future of recruitment is not about choosing between technology and humanity.

It is about designing technology that helps humanity make better decisions.
